Product Description
Blue Topaz
Blue Topaz: The Prince of Gems, Blue Topaz is a silicate mineral of aluminum and fluorine. Blue Topaz crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and its crystals are mostly prismatic terminated by pyramidal and other faces. The name "topaz" is derived (via Old French: Topace and Latin: Topazus) from the Greek ??pαzi?s or the ancient name of St. John's Island in the Red Sea which was difficult to find and from which a stone was mined in ancient times, topaz itself wasn't really known about before the classical era. Nicols, the author of one of the first systematic treatises on minerals and gemstones, dedicated two chapters to the topic in 1652. In the middle Ages, the name topaz was used to refer to any gemstone, but in modern times, it denotes only the silicate described above. The masoretic text (the Hebrew on which most modern Protestant Bible translations of the Old Testament are based) has pitdah as the gem the stone is made from; some scholars think it is related to an Assyrian word meaning flashed. More likely, pitdah is derived from Sanskrit words, meaning "colored burn". Pliny says that Topaz is a legendary island in the Red Sea and the mineral "topaz" was first mined there. The word topaz might be related to the Arabic word, which meant the subject of the search, or Sanskrit word "tapas" meaning, "Heat" or "fire." Today we also have blue topaz, which has a pale to medium blue color created by irradiation. Topaz, which enhanced to become blue, is found in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, and China. In early 1998, a new type of enhanced topaz made its appearance, the surface-enhanced topaz, with colors described as blue to greenish-blue or emerald green. Topaz is a very hard gemstone but it can be split with a single blow, a trait it shares with diamond.
